Fugitive Dezi Freeman Killed After Seven-Month Manhunt
Dezi Freeman, the suspect accused of fatally shooting two officers in Porepunkah, has been shot dead following a lengthy manhunt in rural Victoria.
Victoria police chief commissioner Mike Bush confirmed that a man was fatally shot by police shortly after 8:30 AM on Monday, following an hours-long standoff where he did not surrender peacefully at a property in Thologolong.
While Bush refrained from officially identifying the deceased as Freeman, he stated that police believe it to be him. This incident has brought an end to Operation Summit, the comprehensive investigation into Freeman’s actions, and provides closure for the families of the fallen officers.
During the standoff, Freeman emerged from his hiding place with something resembling a blanket over his shoulders before pointing a gun at the police, prompting multiple officers from the special operations group to open fire. Bush mentioned that Freeman had multiple opportunities to resolve the situation peacefully but chose not to.
Freeman was alone at the property, described as a combination of a shipping container and a long caravan. The police are still investigating how he arrived at that location and whether he received assistance while evading capture for seven months.
Bush emphasized that the police force had heavily invested in resources during the manhunt, which involved personnel from all Australian states and New Zealand, and stated that the closure of this case would allow them to redirect their efforts to other serious crimes.
The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, condemned Freeman’s actions and labeled him as “evil,” expressing that his demise would reduce the threat to the community, though the pain of losing the officers will linger for their families.
