CHAPEL HILL — Practices at Carolina have been remarkably intense, and freshman Derek Dixon is fully embracing the challenge.
The 6’5″ guard from Vienna, Va., has entered a highly competitive atmosphere since his arrival. From dynamic open gym sessions in the summer to rigorous daily practices, Dixon has quickly recognized that this year’s Tar Heels are defined by resilience and strong defense.
“We’ve got a lot of competitors,” Dixon, a four-star recruit rated No. 55 in the Class of 2025 by ESPN, stated. “Everyone’s bringing their A-game every day.”
Dixon particularly enjoyed the spirited summer pick-up games, which included participation from former UNC players. These games enabled him to understand his teammates’ styles, build camaraderie, and gain insights from seniors.
“Nobody likes to lose,” he noted, highlighting a key aspect of the team’s mentality. This intense competitive nature has been pivotal in helping a roster filled with 10 newcomers bond swiftly, especially among his fellow freshmen, who live nearby on campus.
Dixon has formed a close friendship with five-star freshman forward Caleb Wilson. They have dedicated numerous hours to workouts and film study, all while sharing plenty of laughter, strengthening their bond.
Having grown up in a basketball-centric environment, Dixon honed his skills at Gonzaga College High School and played with the elite AAU program Team Takeover, which has well-prepared him for the demands at UNC. “There are no off days in the DMV,” he mentioned, asserting the necessity to consistently perform at a high level.
As he steps into his role at UNC, Dixon is eager about the prospects of the season, emphasizing the team’s combination of size, shooting ability, and competitive spirit. “I think we have a chance to be really good,” he concluded, stressing the importance of daily improvement.
