Dusty Baker Thrilled to Lead Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic
On a memorable Thursday night, Dusty Baker donned a stylish white jersey adorned with blue lettering, reminiscent of his time with the Dodgers, as he stepped into the dugout for his inaugural game as manager of Nicaragua. The national team faced off against their long-time rival, Cuba, in the first of a four-game exhibition series.
Influence of Friends
Baker’s decision to manage Nicaragua was significantly influenced by Marvin Benard and George Santiago. Despite his extensive background playing winter leagues across Latin America, it was Benard, a friend and native of Bluefields, Nicaragua, who played for Baker in San Francisco, and Santiago, a long-time friend, who encouraged him to return to coaching. With a chuckle, Baker remarked, “They’ve been working on me for years.”
A Love for Nicaragua
Baker and his wife visited Nicaragua in September, quickly developing a fondness for the country. His subsequent trip to Guatemala in October showcased Nicaragua’s impressive performance in the Central American Games, further solidifying his decision to manage the team. “It’s awesome because they love baseball,” Baker noted, appreciating the locals’ vibrant passion for the sport.
More than Just Management
For Baker, this role transcends mere management; he seeks to give back to the sport he cherishes. “I like being around players, but this is more for the people than it is for me,” he stated. Witnessing the warm reception and enthusiasm of the fans convinced him of the importance of his role.
Fostering Young Talent
In addition to aiding the national team at the World Baseball Classic, Baker aspires to nurture young players in Nicaragua. With only a few Nicaraguan players in Major League Baseball last year, he wishes to inspire and promote local talent. “Coaching and development was something that was on my mind big time,” he said, hopeful that his efforts will yield positive outcomes for future generations.
Donations and Equipment Drive
Thanks to contributions from Marucci and Rutto Bats, Baker brought essential equipment and bats to support the team. One item he humorously noted was missing: “I’m missing my wristbands,” highlighting his commitment to ensuring the team is well-equipped.
Facing Challenges Ahead
Baker, despite his remarkable achievements in Major League Baseball, views this as his first experience leading a national squad. He humorously acknowledged his age, expressing excitement for this new challenge while recognizing the hurdles their team faces, particularly as underdogs against formidable opponents. “I hope my guys aren’t overwhelmed by who they’re playing,” he said, emphasizing the goal of winning one game at a time.
