As March Madness approaches, it’s time to revise The Athletic’s Big Board for the 2025 NBA Draft. With the season coming to a close, the stakes are higher than ever for several teams trying to secure favorable positions in the draft lottery.
Aside from standout prospects Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper, there are many players in this draft class that come with significant uncertainties. NBA scouts seem less optimistic about the later lottery picks (ranging from No. 6 to No. 20), considering it a chaotic mix of players all vying for attention. Questions also arise about the third, fourth, and fifth picks in this draft.
This unpredictability enhances the tension surrounding the draft lottery, which is set to be fiercely competitive. A number of teams are scrapping for improved lottery odds to join the likes of the Washington Wizards, Charlotte Hornets, and Utah Jazz. Among these, the New Orleans Pelicans find themselves at the No. 3 position despite a tumultuous season filled with injuries, while the Toronto Raptors are struggling defensively at No. 5. Additionally, Brooklyn, Chicago, and Philadelphia are in a tense situation where one of them will have to participate in the Play-In Tournament, even though it’s unclear if they actually desire to do so.
Given Flagg’s potential as a franchise cornerstone, teams need to do everything possible to improve their odds for this draft. However, being the team that finishes at No. 6 may not yield the expected value from this class. There are also concerns regarding the depth of this draft, as discussions among collegiate basketball sources indicate that increased financial incentives may entice older players to remain in college.
Here’s an updated look at my Top 100 prospects leading into March. Movement in rankings is anticipated over the next few months, and several players may opt to return to school after receiving lucrative offers from their universities. For clarification, the Big Board does not factor in team fit, but it does prioritize players who exhibit a strong chance of success in various systems.
Top Prospects Overview
Cooper Flagg’s dominance in the ACC makes him a clear front-runner for the No. 1 pick, potentially changing the trajectory of a franchise. Alongside him, players like V.J. Edgecombe and Derik Queen are also gaining traction. Edgecombe has showcased his skills even amidst Baylor’s struggles, while Queen continues to impress with his versatility as a big man, garnering attention from numerous scouts. Meanwhile, guards like Jeremiah Fears, who has had an up-and-down season, are also in the mix as potential first-round selections whether they declare for the draft or not.
