Defensive Challenges Contributing to the D-Backs’ 2025 Struggles
The Arizona Diamondbacks’ disappointing 2025 season can largely be attributed to their noticeably poor defense. This became a recurring theme during broadcasts, with commentators like Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly frequently noting how defensive lapses frustrate manager Torey Lovullo. This defensive inconsistency caught my attention early on and persisted through the season. Despite Lovullo’s efforts, things didn’t improve significantly. While the team’s defense wasn’t entirely abysmal—ranking from 11th according to FanGraphs to 24th according to Baseball Reference in key metrics—it marked a decline from their previous year’s performance when they were first in one metric and seventh in another.
Roster Changes Impacting Defensive Performance
One clear area of regression was the swap of Josh Naylor for Christian Walker at first base. Naylor, who ranked 13th in the league with 1 outs above average (OAA) in 2024, couldn’t match Walker’s impressive 13 OAA from that same year. Ironically, both players had similar defensive values as Walker experienced notable declines in both his offense and defense last season. With Naylor now with Seattle, the D-Backs have turned to Carlos Santana as an alternative first baseman. Though Santana’s best offensive days may be behind him, his 8 OAA presents a considerable improvement defensively.
Contrasting Defensive Skills Around the Infield
At third base, Nolan Arenado has long been recognized for his defensive prowess, even as his offensive contributions wane with age. In contrast, Eugenio Suarez has struggled defensively throughout his career, a fact that’s more tolerable when he’s hitting well. This trade-off makes sense for the front office as they prioritize defense over offense, banking on players like Geraldo Perdomo, Ketel Marte, and Corbin Carroll to bolster the team’s run production.
Younger Players Need to Step Up
While the roster adjustments should enhance the defense on paper, relying solely on these changes is unlikely to restore the team to their previous levels of performance. They will require improvements from existing younger players, especially Perdomo and Gabriel Moreno. Perdomo enjoyed a breakout season, showing promise defensively, but there’s still room for growth as he gains confidence in his role. Moreno, on the other hand, has demonstrated remarkable defensive skills since joining from the Blue Jays but faces challenges in maintaining his health.
Durability Concerns for Gabriel Moreno
Moreno’s ability to impact games defensively and offensively is significant, yet injuries have frequently sidelined him. From shoulder inflammation to a finger fracture, these issues have hindered his playing time. Though his defensive capabilities are strong when fit, his ongoing health struggles could pose a threat to his effectiveness on the field.
The Road Ahead for D-Backs’ Defense
The upcoming season will see increased scrutiny on the team’s defense, particularly with a rotation that may lack strikeout power. For the D-Backs to improve, not just roster changes, but also the development and durability of key players will be crucial. By addressing both defensive capability and player health, the D-Backs can aim to rebuild toward a more successful season.
