OXNARD, Calif. – McClay Focuses on Training Camp
After recently signing a five-year extension, Cowboys vice president of player personnel, Will McClay, is closely monitoring the team’s draft picks during training camp.
Challenges Ahead
Even though the lengthy draft process is complete, McClay and the scouting team still face significant challenges, especially given last season’s injury issues.
Adapting to Circumstances
“It’s very fluid,” McClay shared on 105.3 The Fan when discussing his current role. “With camp and injuries, many factors are at play. Last year, we felt confident, but then we lost five defensive ends and five corners—positions that are hard to replace at a high level. We need to be ready for that.”
24/7 Player Acquisition
The Cowboys’ front office emphasizes that player acquisition is a constant effort. As McClay mentioned, they will explore all options to enhance the roster.
Potential Additions
Recently, the Las Vegas Raiders released defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, a first-round pick in 2019. Although he’s currently recovering from a foot fracture, his release presents a possible option for the Cowboys in an area of need.
Training Camp Focus
As McClay continues working off the field, Brian Schottenheimer aims for a high-energy training camp in his debut as an NFL head coach. The initial practices have shown intense competition, reflecting the fast-paced culture McClay and the team desire.
Speed and Toughness in Evaluation
Speed is crucial in today’s NFL, a principle McClay learned from his father. He stresses that players must not only play fast but also process information rapidly. Evaluating toughness is more challenging but vital; McClay looks for how players respond in high-pressure situations both on and off the field.
Looking Ahead
As evaluation continues for McClay and his staff, the Cowboys prepare for their upcoming practices, just 40 days away from the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
