As we approach the start of the college basketball season, which actually began back in April with new arrivals and departures, this Florida basketball team feels different this year.
The Gators showcased incredible energy last summer, marked by fierce competitiveness. The return of elite scorer Walter Clayton Jr., alongside a driven Will Richard and tenacious Alijah Martin, permeated the Hugh Hathcock Basketball Complex. Their leadership and desire for victory were evident, especially as all three have now moved on to the NBA.
Yet, UF’s NCAA championship-winning program retains several standout players, starting with what is arguably the best and deepest frontcourt in the nation. Coach Todd Golden and his staff face the challenge of filling, not replacing, the previous core trio. Early signs indicate the results have been more than promising.
With official fall practices kicking off on Monday, the role projections below are based on observations from summer workouts and pickup games. While subject to change due to the season’s unpredictability—including injuries—the coaching staff has a solid understanding of their current roster. While they might not rank in the top 10 nationally for both offense and defense like last season, the goal remains to be within the top 20 for both areas to maximize chances for a national title. The Gators are expected to score, although potentially not as effectively as last year with the departure of Martin.
Florida is projected to be the favorite for the Southeastern Conference title, with many experts placing them back in contention for the Final Four.
The 2025-26 season opens on November 3 against Arizona in Las Vegas.
BEST PLAYER: Thomas Haugh

Haugh is recognized based on his talent and contribution last season. Transitioning from a full-time “4” to starting “3,” he has shown growth each year. Although he came off the bench for most of the past season, Haugh averaged significant minutes and made substantial contributions in scoring and rebounding. He demonstrated remarkable shooting improvement, and his recent performance has drawn attention as a potential national “breakout player.”
BIG EXPECTATIONS: Alex Condon
After a successful sophomore season, Condon has returned for his junior year, showing signs of potential advancement in his game. With a high basketball IQ and strong work ethic, improvement in several areas could possibly lead him to be a first-round NBA draft pick.
FORCE: Rueben Chinyelu

Transferring from Washington State, Chinyelu made an immediate impact as a consistent starter and key player in the Gators’ championship run. Continued improvement in his offensive game will make him an indispensable asset in the frontcourt.
PEDIGREE PRO PROSPECT: Boogie Fland

Fland, a talented transfer from Arkansas, is expected to step into a crucial role, bringing a blend of speed and playmaking ability that could elevate the Gators’ offensive dynamics significantly.
