The Miner Rundown: UTEP Fall Camp Kicks Off, Recruiting Developments, and Basketball Insights
August is officially here, signaling the return of college sports. UTEP football has launched its second fall camp under Scotty Walden at the Sun Bowl, where 53 newcomers are gearing up for the 2025 season. Meanwhile, UTEP basketball has concluded its summer practices, entering the fifth year of the Joe Golding era. From the Sun Bowl to University Field, fall sports have returned, and we’re here to keep you informed on the Miner Rundown..
Fall Camp Has Commenced
With only 26 days until UTEP football’s season opener against Utah State, the Miners are keen to shake off a disappointing 3-9 record from the 2024 season. A key storyline of fall camp is a competitive four-man quarterback battle that has been ongoing since spring.
Returning starter Skyler Locklear faces competition from Cade McConnell, Shay Smith, and five-star transfer Malachi Nelson from Boise State. Nelson appears more integrated into the team compared to spring, although Locklear’s three years in the Walden system give him a significant advantage.
Coach Walden intends to name a starting quarterback midway through camp, a departure from last year’s approach of waiting until the first game. Additionally, standout players Nate Dyman and Jaden Smith will miss the 2025 season due to injuries, impacting team depth.
Revamped Roster on the Court
UTEP basketball retained nine players from its 2023 team, which made a notable run in the CUSA championship but faced challenges last season, finishing 18-15. With all five starters departing, the program has welcomed ten newcomers and a revamped coaching staff.
Coach Golding emphasized his commitment to the program, stating, “This place is home. We’ve got some unfinished business.” The team aims to end a lengthy drought without an NCAA tournament appearance since 2010 and a conference tournament title since 2005.
Among the newcomers, former Seton Hall player David Tubek and Kaseem Watson, who earned all-MEAC honors in 2024, stand out. They, along with guards Caleb Blackwell and LA Hayes, are expected to make significant contributions this season.
Soccer and Volleyball Gear Up
UTEP soccer is set to kick off year three under coach Gibbs Keeton with an exhibition game in Albuquerque. Following a promising 2024 season, the aim is to vie for a conference title. The Miners’ regular season starts on August 14th against Abilene Christian.
Meanwhile, UTEP volleyball, the school’s top-performing program, prepares for the 2025 season. After their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, the team retains key players like All-American Kaya Weaver and looks to build on last season’s success.
Recruiting News
In recruiting updates, UTEP basketball secured its first commitment for 2026 with San Antonio Brennan guard Donovan Criss and a quarterback for the 2026 class with Bodey Weaver from Colleyville Heritage. Both have shown significant potential, adding to the excitement surrounding the program’s future.
