Midway Through the 2026 Season: Key Highlights
It’s been over a week since the 2026 season began, bringing with it numerous intriguing storylines, statistics, and developments that have captured our focus.
While early-season data may reflect small sample sizes, there are still fascinating trends that have emerged. We consulted seven of our writers to share their favorite early-season stats.
Outstanding Yankees Pitching
The Yankees’ pitching staff is off to an exceptional start, allowing only eight runs over the first seven games. This achievement ties them with the 2002 Giants and 1993 Braves for the fewest runs given up by a team in their initial seven games throughout MLB history. Notably, this superb performance occurs even before their top pitchers, Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón, return, showcasing the depth of their roster.
Hot Starts for Catchers
Following a remarkable season by Cal Raleigh and Drake Baldwin, several catchers have begun the 2026 season impressively. Baldwin, with a .955 OPS and three home runs, demonstrates significant growth. However, Shea Langeliers has truly stood out, launching five home runs in his first seven games and reflecting a consistent improvement from the previous season. Collectively, catchers have hit 31 home runs, second only to right fielders who have 34.
Record-Breaking Rookie Performances
Rookie hitters have made a remarkable impact this season, with 22 home runs and an .851 OPS across their teams’ first six games, matching the 2023 record for home runs while setting a new OPS benchmark. The emergence of additional top prospects, including Konnor Griffin, adds to the excitement as they join the league.
Shohei Ohtani’s Exceptional Skills
Shohei Ohtani continues to dazzle, extending his scoreless innings streak to 22⅔ innings while simultaneously reaching base three times in a game, marking his on-base streak at 36 games. Ohtani remains a dual-threat, excelling as both a pitcher and a hitter. With the potential to further his streaks, all eyes are on his upcoming start against the Blue Jays.
Drake Baldwin’s Stellar Production
Drake Baldwin, recent NL Rookie of the Year, is defying expectations by starting strong in his sophomore season. He made history by scoring in every one of the Braves’ first seven games, a feat previously achieved by Hank Aaron. Baldwin is tied for the MLB lead in runs scored and is also producing impressive batted ball metrics, setting him up for a potential All-Star selection.
Impressive NL East Performance
This season’s NL East became the first division in history where all five teams started 1-0. With four teams above .500, the Braves and Marlins lead the pack. The NL East boasts the best overall run differential (+42), solidifying its reputation for competitive play early in the season.
Konnor Griffin’s Historic Debut
Konnor Griffin, MLB’s top prospect, made his debut at just 19 years old, joining a select group of teenage players to reach the majors. His first hit, an RBI double, places him among legendary company and marks a significant milestone for the Pirates as they showcase their future star.
