The Phoenix Suns’ schedule for the 2025-26 season has been released, sans the distraction of Christmas Day matchups or excessive media attention.
Interestingly, there are only nine nationally televised games. This may not bode well for the team’s brand.
However, this low national exposure does not lessen the interest in Suns basketball. All NBA teams engage with each other, making specific dates and locations less critical compared to the NFL.
Yet, with new management and an evolving roster, questions linger. First-time head coach Jordan Ott has significant challenges ahead. Star player Devin Booker is stepping up to lead without the experience of seasoned veterans. Managing this mix of personalities will be an intriguing task.
Kevin Durant’s Return to Phoenix with the Rockets
Schedule: Nov. 24 (Peacock)
Kevin Durant’s departure from Phoenix leaves fans with mixed feelings and a divided legacy. His talent is evident, having been a two-time All-Star and one of the greatest players to don a Suns uniform.
However, the lack of team success during his time matters greatly. Despite online disagreements among fan bases, it’s clear that even passionate Suns supporters recognize the complexity of their sentiments regarding Durant. Expect an emotional reception, blending cheers and boos when he returns to PHX Arena.
Old Faces in New Places
Schedule: Oct. 25, Nov. 29, March 24
This section isn’t about Bradley Beal and Chris Paul facing off against the Clippers. Their health during the matchup is uncertain, even with faith in coach Ty Lue’s ability to manage star players like Beal, Harden, and Leonard.
Instead, let’s focus on the former Suns player, Cam Johnson, who has found a promising new home with the Denver Nuggets. Johnson’s skills will enhance the team, especially paired with Nikola Jokic, providing depth and reliable shooting.
The Lakers: A Matchup to Watch
Schedule: Dec. 1, Dec. 23, Feb. 26, April 10
Matter-of-factly, Deandre Ayton’s narrative has shifted dramatically over the past few years, from wanting him out of Phoenix to questioning the team’s decision to dismantle the core. His move to the Lakers invites revisiting the debate surrounding his tenure with the Suns and the choices made by GMs around him.
With LeBron James still in the mix, Ayton will find himself part of a drama-heavy roster rather than pure basketball excellence, posing an intriguing challenge for new head coach J.J. Redick.
Competing against Eastern Conference Teams
Magic: Feb. 21, March 31
Pacers: Nov. 13, March 12
Cavaliers: Dec. 31, March 30
These matchups will serve as benchmarks for gauging the Suns’ competitiveness as they face various Eastern Conference teams. These squads share qualities like size and pace, challenging Phoenix’s guard-centric roster to adapt.
The Magic, led by Paolo Banchero, are particularly promising, while the Cavaliers pose a strong test with the Allen-Mobley duo. The Pacers bring an entertaining style that can be unpredictable, offering a glimpse into how well the Suns can stand against competing forces.
If Phoenix can contend effectively in these games, my interest in their season will undoubtedly grow.
