First Look at the Demon Deacons
Fans were given an exciting chance to preview this year’s Demon Deacon men’s basketball team during an open scrimmage held before the football game between Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.
Insights from the Scrimmage
While intersquad scrimmages may not provide a comprehensive view of the team’s potential given that the players compete against each other daily in practice, certain noteworthy aspects were highlighted during this session as the season approaches.
Improved Ball Movement
Last year, Wake Forest’s style was heavily reliant on isolation plays, predominantly revolving around Hunter Sallis and Cameron Hildreth. This often resulted in stalled possessions that ended in difficult “hero shots” as the shot clock dwindled. Although both players were strong contributors, this approach can be limiting in modern college basketball, which favors quick ball movement for better scoring opportunities.
Changes in Offensive Strategy
The recent scrimmage indicated a shift toward a more dynamic offensive strategy. The players showcased a greater tendency to pass the ball effectively, swinging it around the arc and consistently moving toward the paint. Coaches were particularly focused on ensuring players made productive touches in the lane.
Challenges in Outside Shooting
Despite the new offensive approach, concerns about outside shooting resurfaced. Last season, the team struggled with accuracy, shooting under 30% from beyond the arc. While there were some attempts, many quality shots failed to convert at the desired rate. However, transfers like Mekhi Mason and Myles Colvin, alongside returning player Omaha Biliew, demonstrated promising shooting form. The key question remains whether they can maintain consistent shooting throughout the season.
Player Development Opportunities
Juke Harris stood out during the scrimmage as he displayed confidence and skill in scoring from various ranges. His improved jump shooting, a focus of offseason training, will be crucial for the team’s success. Additionally, he made significant contributions defensively, setting a proactive tone for his teammates, which the coaching staff appreciated.
Concerns with Turnovers
Turnovers were an issue last season, particularly with the fast-paced play of point guard Ty-Laur Johnson. This trend appeared again, as both Nate Calmese and Sebastian Akins experienced turnover troubles. For Wake to thrive, the starting point guard must manage the offense effectively without excessive turnovers. With the season still a month away, the coaching staff has time to address these concerns and help the lead guards find their rhythm.
Additional Notable Performances
In addition to Harris, TreVon Spillers showed promising skills around the basket, displaying aggressiveness and effectiveness on the boards. Freshman Isaac Carr impressed with his touch and positioning, while Myles Colvin demonstrated exceptional defensive talent. With his athleticism and determination, Colvin could emerge as a pivotal defensive player alongside Spillers this season.
