This week’s 2025 PGA Championship is being touted by some as the most eagerly awaited major in recent years, while others feel it is grappling for relevance following the excitement of the 2025 Masters. What is clear is that virtually every top player is in strong form, with recent victories for Rory McIlroy at Augusta, Justin Thomas in Hilton Head, Scottie Scheffler in Dallas, Bryson DeChambeau in Korea, and Ryan Fox in Myrtle Beach. Notably, this is one of the few occasions where LIV Golf stars will interact with their former PGA Tour counterparts, which heightens the anticipation.
However, the championship feels more aligned with the PGA Tour than a major event, taking place at a regular Tour stop just in time for its annual date. This year’s conditions are wet initially, and the course will favor typical Tour roughs, as the tournament continues to face questions about its “identity.” Comparing it to the recent excitement at Augusta raises expectations that may be hard to meet. Yet, a descent from such heights can still bring its own excitement.
In my view, this is a major that doesn’t require much buildup before it begins, but it promises to deliver a fantastic spectacle once the competition starts. The top players are in peak form, and the stakes are higher since a win here carries more weight than a Truist Championship. Let’s explore some key players and narratives.
The Big Three
The modern notion of the Big Three often falls short, but this iteration includes this year’s best player (Rory McIlroy), the current world No. 1 (Scottie Scheffler), and potentially the best major performer in the past year (Bryson DeChambeau). As with Augusta, Rory and Scottie are frontrunners according to betting odds, followed by Bryson, then a few other talented players.
Rory’s case is straightforward: he is in top form and has a successful history at this course. The importance of distance off the tee plays a significant role, and Rory’s ability to dominate this course with power and precision has led to multiple victories. Justin Thomas noted that Rory’s shot shape is particularly beneficial for this course configuration.
PGA Identity
The tournament is strongly associated with the presence of Blockie this decade, and it is often seen as the major where the most unexpected events occur, like player arrests. Yet, the PGA Championship seems to lack a definitive identity. Does it really require one? The continuous debate over its identity is a common topic during practice days.
Depth in the Field
This championship may best be characterized by its strong field. The PGA continues to develop competitive pairings, and this year is no exception. Jon Rahm makes his debut, while defending champ Xander Schauffele and 2017 winner Justin Thomas also have strong histories here. Although Collin Morikawa is performing well, he will need to tackle distance challenges to remain competitive.
Testing Quail Hollow
Unlike typical major weeks where weather disruptions might raise concerns, the familiar Quail Hollow venue offers a different atmosphere. Despite the recent adjustments made to the course, many pros have voiced dissatisfaction with the changes over the years. The course offers a unique challenge, emphasizing execution over any complicated strategy.
In conclusion, players will need to possess a well-rounded skill set to navigate this course effectively. It’s a straightforward yet challenging venue that rewards distance and accuracy. Jordan Spieth, aiming for a career slam this week, faces the challenge of competing against dominant players, even as he seeks to resurrect his form following wrist surgery.
