New Characters and Hogwarts in HBO’s Harry Potter Series
A new take on Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, Snape, and Hogwarts has been unveiled in the teaser trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series.

The first footage from this eagerly awaited adaptation reimagines J.K. Rowling’s seven-book saga into a multi-season dramatic series. The inaugural season will cover Rowling’s first novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which was first adapted by Warner Bros. in 2001. The show features a young Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) along with Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton) and Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) in their first year at Hogwarts. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Francesca Gardiner, a writer from Succession, serves as the showrunner, with Mark Mylod from Game of Thrones directing several episodes. JB Perrette, CEO of global streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, has labeled the series as “the biggest streaming event in HBO Max’s history.”
Controversy Surrounding Casting Choices
Recently, the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Snape has sparked controversy due to the character’s description in the books. Essiedu reported receiving death threats, stating that such backlash affects him emotionally but he aims to channel it into his performance. Lithgow, too, has faced pressure due to Rowling’s contentious political views, emphasizing that the books promote values against intolerance.
