Patrice Evra Discusses Upcoming MMA Fight with Luis Suarez
Patrice Evra has provided an update on his anticipated MMA bout with former Premier League adversary Luis Suarez, following Evra’s announcement that he has begun training for his combat debut.
Now 43, Evra retired in July 2019 after making 734 appearances in professional football, during which he secured 20 titles over 21 years. In contrast, Suarez continues to compete in the MLS, playing alongside stars like Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
Since retiring, Evra has engaged in various activities beyond football, including sports commentary, entrepreneurship, and establishing a presence on social media.
As Evra prepares for his first fight with the Professional Fighters League (PFL) on May 23 in Paris, he has not yet revealed his opponent. However, he has expressed a desire to face Suarez, whom he previously accused of racial abuse during a match in 2011.
During a conversation with journalist Ariel Helwani, Evra explained the motivations behind wanting to match up against Suarez. He mentioned, “When the PFL asked me who I would like, I said Luis Suarez because I had a beef with him when I was the captain of United.”
In discussing the potential matchup, Evra stated, “I met him after, when I played for Juventus, and I shook his hand, so I have no issue. But I think the world wants to see that fight.” He remains hopeful for the fight to happen, noting that he has even made his desires known to Suarez on social media.
Evra’s training journey began in 2016, aided by his friendship with PFL star Cedric Doumbe. Recently, UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov reached out to Evra to assist with his preparations, showcasing the support he’s received from former teammates like Paul Pogba, further building excitement for the upcoming event.
