The Return of BlackBerry: Clicks Technology Unveils the Communicator
The BlackBerry brand is making a comeback, of sorts. Last week, mobile keyboard manufacturer Clicks Technology introduced its new smartphone, the $499 Communicator, featuring a physical keyboard. Additionally, the company is offering a $79 slide-out physical keyboard compatible with any device.
Insights from CES
At CES, TechCrunch interviewed Clicks’ co-founder and chief marketing officer, Jeff Gadway, and got hands-on experience with the latest prototype of the upcoming device.
Device Features and Functionality
The Communicator mimics the classic BlackBerry keyboard layout and has a messaging-focused touchscreen, operating on Android 16, allowing it to run any Android app. The company has collaborated with Niagara Launcher to streamline app visibility on the home screen, providing easy access through a scrollable list.
Positive Reception and Sales
According to Gadway, the initial reception of the new devices has exceeded expectations. Though he didn’t disclose specific sales figures, he mentioned that the company recorded a sale every 6.5 seconds across both devices throughout the week.
Specifications and Design
The prototype offered a glimpse of the final design, which matches the expected size and weight of the retail version. It includes 256 GB of onboard storage, expandable to 2 TB via microSD. Additionally, the device has a 4000mAh silicon-carbon battery and weighs approximately 170 grams (6 oz). It also features interchangeable back covers for customizable aesthetics.
User Experience and Functionality
During the hands-on test, the phone felt well-balanced, offering a good grip. Gadway explained that the final design was determined after testing multiple 3D-printed prototypes. The phone’s screen sits slightly elevated, and its curved chin helps protect the keys when placed face down. A “Signal Light” on the side can be configured to alert users with different colors for prioritized notifications from specific contacts or apps.
Camera and Performance
The Clicks Communicator boasts a 24-megapixel front camera and a rear camera capable of capturing 50-megapixel images, along with optical and electronic image stabilization. Powered by a 4-nanometer MediaTek 5G IoT processor and equipped with 8 GB of RAM, the device features a 4.03-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,080 x 1,200. It supports wired charging at 18 watts and wireless charging at 15 watts, catering to security-conscious users with Qi compatibility and Android Strongbox readiness. The device is anticipated to ship in the latter half of 2026.
