A British billionaire has been convicted in the US for inadequate money-laundering controls within his cryptocurrency business, yet he is now creating a political network in Westminster that supports “anti-woke” and rightwing movements.
Ben Delo, 42, who received a pardon from Donald Trump last year, has been backing Rupert Lowe, an anti-migration MP running against Nigel Farage, while also building connections with prominent figures like Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch and former cabinet member Michael Gove.
Delo, an Oxford alumnus who relocated to Hong Kong in 2012, claims to advocate for “free speech” and aims to combat “political correctness.” He is involved with over 50 organizations across the political spectrum and community, including various non-affiliated groups.
Recent investigations reveal that Delo’s financial support extends to individuals and organizations with stringent views on immigration, nationalism, and abortion. He reportedly has invested over £100 million in philanthropy, offering access to a facility in Westminster, dubbed the Sanctuary, where various events can be held without charge.
Last year, the Migration-focused party Restore Britain, founded by Lowe, launched its mass deportation campaign from the Sanctuary. The Triggernometry podcast, which promotes free speech, has also utilized the venue to reach its 1.7 million listeners, showcasing a range of views, including contentious perspectives on ethnicity and identity.
While Delo insists he does not necessarily endorse all the views promoted in his venues, he connects hardline figures with mainstream politicians. Notably, at his summer party last year, attendees included key actors from various factions, emphasizing the mingling of contrasting ideologies within his influence.
Delo’s journey has been marred by his 2022 conviction for violating US financial laws during his tenure at BitMEX, which he refers to as a “non-crime.” With his newfound wealth, he portrays himself as a philanthropist dedicated to challenging cancel culture, reinforcing a narrative that positions him as a significant player in the current socio-political landscape.
