The Asia Cup, which begins on September 9 in Abu Dhabi, will mark a significant milestone with the inclusion of an Afghan commentator in the box. Ahmad Farhad Fidai, a medical graduate from Kabul University, will make history as the first Afghan voice in a major multilateral tournament.
“It is a great honor,” says Farhad (42), now residing in the US. “I’ve provided commentary for Afghanistan during bilateral matches, but participating in a prestigious event like the Asia Cup is a new experience. I am eager to share the mic with legends like Sunil Gavaskar.”
Although Farhad is not the first Afghan commentator—Hamid Hasan and Norman Mirza have previously taken on similar roles—he has been a prominent voice in Afghanistan’s cricket games over the last four years. His name was put forward by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) to the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), which in turn recommended him to Sony, the event’s producer and broadcaster.
Traditionally, non-local commentators—mainly from Pakistan—have represented Afghanistan during international matches. Farhad feels that foreign commentators often fail to fully express the team’s spirit. “They can’t truly connect with the emotions,” he explains, currently working as a commentator for a tri-series in Sharjah.
Farhad shares how cricket is more than a sport in Afghanistan; it embodies hope and happiness, especially in a country facing difficulties. He recalls an incident in Kabul, illustrating the profound connection fans have with cricketers. “You must visit Afghanistan to experience the country’s passion for cricket firsthand,” he states confidently.
Farhad expresses optimism about Afghanistan’s prospects in the Asia Cup, believing they can reach the Super Four stage. “This team can bring joy back to a nation recovering from a devastating earthquake,” he concludes, hopeful for the impact they can make.
