Numerous federal judges nationwide are preventing certain aspects of President Donald Trump‘s agenda from being implemented.
Significance
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has signed 89 executive orders aimed at advancing a broad conservative agenda on various issues, including the economy, transgender rights, and the dismissal of federal employees.
However, many of these executive orders are facing legal opposition, with critics contending that they exceed his executive authority and breach the U.S. Constitution. Various judges have issued rulings to temporarily halt these policies, which has stalled his agenda for now.
Newsweek has reached out to the White House for a response regarding this matter.
Key Details
Conservative groups are increasingly scrutinizing these judges, with calls for their impeachment due to their decisions blocking Trump’s initiatives. In contrast, others argue that judges have the right to impede laws or orders that contravene constitutional standards.
Here’s a summary of the judges who have halted Trump’s actions to date:
Brendan Hurson
Judge Hurson from the U.S. District Court for Maryland has obstructed the Trump administration’s attempt to withdraw federal funding from hospitals that provide gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth, asserting in February that the challenge to his ruling is likely to succeed.
Adam Abelson
The U.S. District Court Judge Abelson also put a preliminary injunction on sections of an executive order that prohibited diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within federal agencies, finding the order overly ambiguous and leaving agencies with no clear compliance path. However, this injunction was lifted by an appeals court later.
Amir Ali
Judge Ali of the District of Columbia issued a temporary injunction against Trump’s efforts to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), noting that the administration failed to justify a “blanket suspension of all congressionally appropriated foreign aid.”
