David Alonso, regarded as MotoGP’s ‘next big thing’, is anticipated to make his debut in the premier class as a Honda rider next year, although specifics about this transition are still unclear.
According to Spanish publication AS, Alonso is expected to be selected as Fabio Quartararo’s teammate in the Honda factory team for 2027. This shift has been backed by other media outlets in Spain and Italy, though it’s still uncertain if he will join the factory team.
Regardless, it seems Honda has won a competitive bidding process that was anticipated following Alonso’s impressive performance in securing the Moto3 title two years ago. Below are some significant questions that emerge regarding this development and its implications.
Factory or Satellite Ride?
Reports from Sky Sports Italy and Motorsport.com suggest that Honda will contemplate whether Alonso should join the factory team or take on a factory-status position in a satellite team.
Currently, Honda has four bikes on the circuit and is actively seeking to expand to an additional team. Recently, they have been eyeing a partnership with Tech3 to take advantage of KTM’s ongoing challenges and Tech3’s change in ownership.
Is Alonso’s Skillset a Fit for MotoGP Stardom?
There is little doubt that Alonso has the potential to be a competent MotoGP rider, and he is undoubtedly a worthy investment.
Alonso’s CV
2023: 3rd in Moto3
2024: 1st in Moto3
2025: 9th in Moto2
2026: 7th in Moto2*
*after three weekends
His results in Moto2 may appear misleading. Ninth place as a rookie in 2025 was commendable considering rookie performances in that category, and his current seventh position is likely influenced by factors such as bad luck.
What About Marini and Mir?
With Honda’s potential expansion to six bikes, it leaves room for potentially retaining one of its current riders, Luca Marini or Joan Mir, despite both being linked with other opportunities.
Marini has been suggested for a lucrative move to Yamaha next season, while Mir has been mentioned in connection with a Switch to Trackhouse Aprilia, reuniting with his former team boss Davide Brivio.
Could Moreira Be Unsettled?
This concern is particularly relevant if Alonso lands a spot in the factory team. LCR Honda rookie Moreira might feel overlooked if Alonso is placed ahead of him.
Although Moreira faced challenges in his last outing, he has been making significant progress in his rookie season. If Alonso joins the Honda hierarchy above him, this could raise eyebrows for Moreira, as he has more MotoGP experience than Alonso at this point.
Is Alonso Definitely the Best Rookie Available?
While David Alonso is a strong contender, it’s worth noting that his Moto2 journey has had him consistently compared with his Aspar teammate, Dani Holgado, who has also had a strong showing.
Holgado has performed admirably in Moto2 this season and has reportedly secured a deal to join Enea Bastianini at Gresini, suggesting that Alonso isn’t the only impressive talent on the grid.
