The 2025 Miami Open nears its conclusion as one player focuses on recovery from injury.
Top players from the WTA Tour arrived in Florida with hopes of winning the prestigious title, but only two contenders remain.
Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka will face off in the final on Saturday, each aiming for their first Miami Open victory.
The Belarusian has triumphed in her last two significant finals against Pegula, achieving victories in Cincinnati and last year’s US Open.
Victoria Azarenka Announces Extended Recovery Period Due to Injury
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka recently provided an update on her condition via X, following an injury sustained during her second-round match.
Azarenka shared, “Quick update on my injury: I’ve been working on the diagnosis and have started rehab and training. Thankfully, there’s no long-term damage, but full recovery will take some time. Thank you for all the support—it means a lot. I also want to thank my opponent, Karolina [Muchova], for her kindness and grace during this time.”
The injury occurred as Azarenka was trailing 0-6 against Muchova, during the initial game of the second set when she injured her shoulder. Nevertheless, Muchova demonstrated great sportsmanship by assisting Azarenka off the court after her retirement from the match.
Aryna Sabalenka Aims to Follow in Azarenka’s Footsteps at Miami Open
Sabalenka has a chance to become the second Belarusian woman to clinch the Miami Open title if she defeats Pegula in the final. Azarenka previously won the tournament three times between 2009 and 2016.
While Sabalenka is on the cusp of a significant accomplishment, she previously faced challenges at the Miami Open, with only eight wins in her first 14 appearances. This year, she hopes to capitalize on her best result yet in Miami by claiming victory against Pegula in the upcoming final.
