Sam Landau’s Return to Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Sam Landau sat back at the Indiana University Tennis Center, holding his old tennis shoes. “I never thought I’d come back here, just because of the trajectory,” he reflected, surprised by how his journey unfolded.
Once a star on these courts, Landau had captivated fans with his thrilling performances, rapidly rising from an unnoticed recruit to one of the nation’s best men’s tennis players in just two years. However, he eventually walked away from it all.
Transition to Duke
In the fall of 2023, after winning eight matches at the All-American championships, Landau climbed in national rankings. Observing peers earning significant NIL money, he sought to elevate his own career. Feeling that professional tennis was within reach, he sought a national championship. He noted that Indiana’s culture was more balanced than focused on fostering future pros.
In December, Landau confided in Indiana’s men’s tennis coach, Jeremy Wurtzman, about his intention to enter the transfer portal. He feared that delaying until May would complicate his academic credits and hinder his chance of transferring to another business school.
Struggles at Duke
Throughout his remaining season at Indiana while in the transfer portal, Landau achieved significant wins but regretted the situation’s timing. He faced pressure as he knew each performance could impact his future opportunities. Although Indiana’s coaching staff hoped he would stay, Landau chose Duke by season’s end.
At Duke, he initially thrived, playing his best tennis and bonding with teammates. However, after an injury in late September, he felt isolated and disconnected, realizing he had made a mistake in leaving Indiana.
Reflections and Growth
Upon returning to Indiana, Landau expressed relief from worries that plagued him at Duke. He achieved individual accolades, including winning Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week and being the first Hoosier since 2004 to qualify for the NCAA’s Singles Championship. While eyes are set on a professional tennis career, he acknowledges the need for personal growth and self-reflection.
After his tumultuous experience, Landau feels rejuvenated and more aligned with his goals. He acknowledges past struggles but now sees Indiana as a place of opportunity, ready to reach new heights with his teammates.
