The world of mixed martial arts may not technically have an offseason, but it certainly feels like one at the moment.
It’s been over three weeks since the last event, UFC Fight Night on December 13, and there are still more than two weeks until the next one—UFC 324 on January 24 in Las Vegas.
If you’re feeling restless due to the lack of fights, you’re not alone. The anticipation for the 2026 schedule is palpable, so here are some bold predictions for this year. MMA is inherently unpredictable, which makes any forecast a possibility. Below are scenarios that, while surprising, could feasibly happen.
Jon Jones Will Not Fight in 2026
While many expect Jon Jones to make his return to MMA this year, I’m inclined to disagree. Following his announcement in July about coming back, there’s strong belief he intends to fight, particularly against Alex Pereira. However, doubting Jones’s return is reasonable. At 38, he hasn’t fought much recently and chose not to fight in 2025. He seems financially secure, shown by declining a lucrative match against Tom Aspinall.
Conor McGregor Will Fight Twice
Looking for bold? Here it is: I once thought McGregor would never compete again, but now I predict he’ll fight twice in 2026. The motivation? The White House fight card. McGregor may view this as his opportunity to reclaim discipline and showcase his star power, especially against a favorable opponent like Michael Chandler. If he performs well, the UFC will likely schedule him for more fights, perhaps even for a title at Madison Square Garden.
Multiple Champions Will Retire
Seeing champions retire on a high note is becoming more common. In 2026, expect multiple retirement announcements from current champions. With fighters like heavyweight Tom Aspinall dealing with significant health issues, and others like Khamzat Chimaev expressing less enjoyment for the sport, retirement could loom for several top competitors. This could include veterans like Alexander Volkanovski, who might decide to step away if he seals his legacy this year.
The BMF Title Will Be Retired
The BMF title has had a good run, but it may be time to retire it. With a lineage that includes stars like Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal, it seems fitting to conclude it after Max Holloway faces Charles Oliveira at UFC 326. While it served as an entertaining promotional tool, it may have lost its significance, making retirement a sensible move for the UFC.
Usman Nurmagomedov Will Re-sign with PFL
Championship contender Usman Nurmagomedov, a 27-year-old undefeated fighter, is likely to remain with PFL. Despite speculation about moving to the UFC, the PFL’s need to retain him is strong, given his status and branding potential. With the lightweight division in the UFC already crowded, it might be beneficial for Nurmagomedov to continue his journey in PFL, where he will be valued significantly.
