Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson has explored pro wrestling and the NFL recently, but he has quickly reminded the combat sports community why he has been viewed as one of the most formidable prospects in fighting.
Following his first-round TKO against Braden Peterson at LFA 217 in Minnesota last month, Steveson stepped into the spotlight again by headlining the Dirty Boxing Championship in Nashville. Known primarily for his wrestling, his striking prowess was a pleasant surprise.
Just moments into the heavyweight clash against Billy Swanson at Dirty Boxing 4, Steveson delivered powerful uppercuts that quickly took down “Big Sexy,” achieving a remarkable knockout just 15 seconds into the fight. Despite Swanson’s long absence from winning, Steveson showcased his impressive power, complementing his elite wrestling background.
Making waves at the 2020 Olympics, Steveson became the youngest freestyle super heavyweight champion at only 21 years old. A two-time NCAA champion and recipient of the prestigious Dan Hodge Trophy twice, he is quickly solidifying his status as one of this generation’s most dominant amateur wrestlers.
With two professional fights now under his belt and UFC legend Jon Jones in his corner, Steveson addressed UFC VP of Talent Relations Mick Maynard after the fight, stating, “Mick, you’ve seen a little bit, but I hope to show a lot more.”
Steveson’s knockout wasn’t the only standout moment of the night, as Bryan Battle triumphed over Nick Kohring in the co-main event with a decisive finishing blow while Kohring was down. Other notable performances included Montavious Ware, who secured a swift first-round finish against Alexander Schenk, and Jaleel Willis, who achieved a second-round knockout victory over Peter Stanonik.
