This week, Team Europe’s official 2025 Ryder Cup photograph captured an unexpected celebrity presence at the Bethpage Black course.
Former Italy and Chelsea footballer Gianfranco Zola joined the lineup as Europe ramped up their preparations for the event, which kicks off on Friday a short distance east of New York City.
Having retired from football, Zola, a passionate golfer with a single-digit handicap, has taken on a unique role as the official buggy driver for Francesco Molinari, Italy’s vice-captain. At 59, he will be present on the course during the three-day tournament, supporting the European team as they strive to reclaim the Ryder Cup on American soil after 13 years.
Who is Gianfranco Zola?
Zola is a celebrated Premier League figure from his tenure at Chelsea, where he played from 1996 to 2003 and helped the club secure two FA Cups, a League Cup, and the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
The 5ft 6in forward was among the most prominent of the league’s early foreign signings after its 1992 launch, having previously made his mark in Italy’s Serie A with teams like Napoli and Parma, as well as the national team.
He was part of the Italian squad that lost the 1994 World Cup final to Brazil in a penalty shootout, earning 35 international caps between 1991 and 1997. Zola concluded his playing career with Cagliari from 2003-05 and later transitioned to management.
What’s His Role at the Ryder Cup?
Zola’s primary duty this year is to drive the buggy for Molinari, who made history in 2018 by becoming golf’s first Italian major champion at The Open.
Molinari, now 42, has been part of three Ryder Cup-winning teams as a player and is one of five vice-captains appointed by current captain Luke Donald. Last year, he also served as a vice-captain when Europe triumphed over the Americans in Rome.
Nicknamed “glorified buggy drivers,” Ryder Cup vice-captains typically mentor younger players, and having a dedicated driver for this purpose adds a modern twist to the tournament’s customary roles.
How Did He Get This Job?
Zola earned this position through his long-standing friendship with Molinari, which began in 2009 when Molinari moved to London while Zola managed West Ham.
Molinari, who now resides in California, has maintained a close bond with Zola. “He is a good friend of mine, and there was no other choice,” Molinari stated.
While they have previously interacted informally at Ryder Cups, Zola’s role this week will be more integrated within the event.
Is Zola a Proficient Golfer?
Since retiring, Zola has played golf at a single-digit standard and frequently participates in Pro-Am tournaments and charity events.
Recently, he took part in the Icons of Football golf series, competing in a match between Team World and Team England in Bangkok.
Has a Footballer Ever Participated in the Ryder Cup Before?
Yes, various football figures have attended past Ryder Cups, some even gaining access to team rooms.
In 2014, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson addressed Team Europe, a moment that Rory McIlroy cherished during his time on the team.
Additionally, figures like Gareth Bale and Andriy Shevchenko took part in an exhibition match two years ago in Rome, showcasing the blend of football and golf connections.
Many Ryder Cup golfers have formed friendships with footballers, notably Tyrrell Hatton and former Liverpool star James Milner, who support one another’s careers.
