Provo’s Soccer Showdown: BYU Dominates Utah State
Mia Goettsche wasted no time making an impact, scoring twice within a minute of entering the game as BYU’s women’s soccer team claimed a 2-0 victory over rival Utah State at South Field. The match attracted a crowd of 3,213 on Saturday night.
Goettsche’s stellar performance marked her first career brace. The freshman from Eastvale, California, expressed her excitement following the match, especially as the Cougars bounced back from a tough 1-0 loss earlier in the week to No. 13 Arkansas.
“Scoring for the first time at South and getting two goals? I’m thrilled,” Goettsche said. “It was crucial for us.”
Goalkeeper Paiton Collins contributed a solid performance, making four saves and achieving the shutout, her third in four matches. The Cougars now hold a record of 4-1-1 this season.
Historically, BYU dominated the in-state rivalry, winning numerous matches consecutively. However, Utah State’s recent performance under head coach Manny Martins has shifted the dynamics, with the Aggies holding a favorable 3-1-1 record against the Cougars over the last five years.
Goettsche opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing a corner kick play. She then doubled the lead with a header in the 33rd minute, showcasing her aerial skill. BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood praised Goettsche’s abilities, noting her promising future in the sport.
Despite being outshot 23-12, with Utah State pressing harder in the second half, the Aggies struggled to convert their chances into goals. Martins acknowledged the need for the team to improve their consistency and energy levels moving forward. Meanwhile, BYU looks to continue its momentum in their next match against Utah Valley.
