Golf’s New Demographic in Bentham
Bentham is an ideal spot for enjoying retirement, with over half of its residents in North Yorkshire being over 50. Recently, however, the village has seen an unexpected surge of young visitors eager to play golf.
The Rise of Young Golfers
Some young enthusiasts have traveled nearly two hours from Manchester to enjoy the Bentham golf course. According to John Marshall, the club’s operations manager, the trend was ignited during the pandemic: “Covid started it off. It was the only way they could see mates and have a beer,” he explained. This transformed golf into a social hub and has continued since then.
Changing Perceptions of Golf
Traditionally viewed as a pastime for the elderly, golf’s image has shifted post-Covid, attracting a younger crowd. Stats from England Golf indicate that the average age of club members dropped from 56.18 to 54.99 in just 2024. A study in the US by the National Golf Foundation revealed that 71% of rounds played after the pandemic were by golfers under 50.
Golf: A Safe Social Activity
With restrictions easing, golf became a preferred option for socializing safely. Toby Warner, a 23-year-old who recently took up golf, noted, “It was mostly just a vehicle to see my friends, but then the addiction took hold.” Now 28, Warner frequents the course every other weekend and enjoys the blend of fresh air and social interaction.
Cultural Resurgence and Business Growth
Golf is experiencing a cultural revival, with notable figures like former President Donald Trump and celebrities like Tom Holland engaging with the sport. A recent Netflix release, “Happy Gilmore 2,” attracted 46.7 million views within three days, highlighting its renewed appeal. This increased visibility has benefited golf courses, with young players flocking to the course, especially during discounted evening hours.
Influencers Impacting the Sport
The rise of golf influencers has further popularized the game among the youth. For instance, Rick Shiels, with 3 million subscribers, and golf-focused channels like Big Wedge Golf have garnered significant attention, boosting interest in local courses. After a feature by YouTuber Golf Mates, Bentham course saw a remarkable surge in players.
Inclusivity and Access in Golf
While golf clubs are becoming more inclusive, some challenges remain. Golf enthusiasts like Amber Mayes-Long, who once viewed the sport as exclusive, now appreciate its calming experience. She dedicates considerable time to golf each month but points out lingering issues with facilities for women. Marshall emphasizes the need for clubs to modernize, noting that before Covid, there was a decline in members, which has since reversed thanks to young golfers looking for flexible playing options.
