Lewis Hamilton expressed his need for the Formula 1 summer break following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
This marked the first occasion since his transfer to Ferrari from Mercedes that Lewis Hamilton left a race weekend at the Hungaroring without scoring any points.
While a 12th place start and finish reflects poorly for the 40-year-old, it doesn’t reveal the entire narrative. Hamilton was almost as fast as his teammate Charles Leclerc in Q2, but that slight difference kept him out of the top 10 qualifying session.
The seven-time world champion commented that Ferrari might need to rethink their driver strategy, while Leclerc achieved what he labeled the most unexpected pole position of his Formula 1 career.
Ferrari’s directive for Hamilton to start lifting and coasting early in the race complicated his ability to make progress, especially once it was clear that he was not on the optimal strategy. By the time Hamilton addressed the media again, he was expressing how much he still loves racing, showcasing a shift in his mindset compared to a few weeks prior.
The timing of the summer break is ideal for Hamilton after a taxing 14-race stretch, where the groundwork he laid before the season served as excellent preparation for what has turned out to be a far more challenging campaign than anticipated.
