Sammy Hagar Discusses His Relationship with Alex Van Halen
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Sammy Hagar reflected on his long-standing estrangement from former VAN HALEN guitarist Alex Van Halen. It has been 21 years since they last communicated, and Alex notably excluded any mention of Hagar in his memoir, “Brothers”. Hagar revealed he has sought insight into their rift from various sources, including the band’s former manager, Irving Azoff.
Hagar explained that some believe Alex is upset over the success of his Cabo Wabo business. He stated, “They didn’t want it anymore when it was losing money, and they gave it to you, and you turned it around and made hundreds of millions.” Hagar defended his position, arguing that he was left with the venture and had to indemnify them in case of lawsuits.
Addressing his previous autobiography, “Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock”, in which he critiqued the state of Eddie Van Halen‘s health during a tour, Hagar noted that while he had been candid, he does not wish to revisit those times negatively. He added, “That’s just water under the bridge.” Hagar believes Alex is frustrated because he and former bassist Mike Anthony continue to perform while Alex cannot.
When interviewer Andy Greene suggested that Alex’s health problems could fuel his bitterness, Hagar responded with understanding, stating, “Al, you’re fine. Just leave me alone. I’ll leave you alone.” He pointed out that by maintaining the VAN HALEN legacy, he is also benefitting Alex financially.
In a separate reflection on his memoir, Alex explained that he chose to conclude “Brothers” in 1984 to capture the essence of their early years. He described this period as a time filled with excitement and potential, which he felt diminished in later years. He noted, “After 1984, it became much more… I can’t explain it, but it wasn’t the same.”
Alex has also commented on his relationship with former singer David Lee Roth, suggesting that years of separation have changed their dynamic. He stated, “I don’t hold [Roth’s departure from VAN HALEN] against him,” highlighting the intricate relationships within the band.
Reflecting on the present, Alex chose not to engage with Hagar regarding the past or their shared history. He emphasized that the core essence of VAN HALEN rested with its original members, stating, “The heart and the soul and the creativity… was Dave, Ed, Mike and me.”
