The Detroit Lions conducted their second training camp practice of 2025, entering Day 2 of the acclimation period. They extended practice by an extra 15 minutes on Monday, but the team is still in the early stages of assessing the strengths of their roster.
Participation Report
Jeremy Reisman has released a comprehensive participation report for Day 2, which includes updates on players such as Alex Anzalone’s hamstring issue. I won’t repeat the list, but it’s worth checking for positive recovery updates on various players.
Hendon Hooker Shines in QB2 Role
During his morning press conference, Coach Dan Campbell clarified that the QB2 position is up for grabs and provided Hendon Hooker with a list of improvements to focus on, such as urgency and footwork.
In the reserve QB rotation on Day 2, Hooker displayed noticeable growth, showing cleaner footwork, quicker decision-making, and improved accuracy compared to Sunday. When he had time, his throws were strong, even under pressure.
“The changes I made this offseason really help me play faster and more in sync,” Hooker conveyed after practice.
Successful Deep Passes
While the Lions struggled with deep passes on Day 1, Monday was different as Jared Goff successfully connected with Jameson Williams (twice) and rookie Isaac TeSlaa on long throws.
A highlight occurred during 7-on-7s when Goff expertly drew in a defensive back and launched a 35-yard throw to Williams, who leveraged his speed to create separation.
Offensive Line Updates
Coach Campbell mentioned that the next ten days of practice will be critical for evaluating the offensive line before the Hall of Fame game, aiming to finalize decisions on center positions while maintaining competition throughout camp.
Despite ongoing assessments, the starting offensive line remained unchanged for a second consecutive day, with the preferred lineup appearing as follows:
LT Dan Skipper
LG Christian Mahogany
C Tate Ratledge
RG Graham Glasgow
RT Penei Sewell
Marcus Davenport’s Dominance
Among the biggest offseason questions was who would assist Aidan Hutchinson in pass rushing. The Lions confirmed Marcus Davenport as the starter, and he proved this decision right on Monday by showcasing his impressive skills.
In Day 2 of camp, Davenport excelled by collapsing the pocket and demonstrating his ability to disrupt plays, leaving fans encouraged about his potential.
Defensive Backs Excelling
Despite some injuries among the Lions’ cornerbacks, the unit, along with the safeties, showed confidence, particularly Terrion Arnold, who stood out with impactful plays.
Arnold’s impressive man coverage led to a pass breakup when he dived to thwart a throw to tight end Brock Wright. He also excelled on special teams, contributing to a successful tackle after navigating around blockers.
