The NCAA held its first golf championship in 1939, following an annual tournament previously organized by the National Intercollegiate Golf Association.
The inaugural champion, Louis Bayard Jr. of Princeton, was named in 1897.
Phil Mickelson and Ben Crenshaw are tied for the most NCAA individual championships, with three each. Meanwhile, five players have claimed the title twice: Dick Crawford, Dexter Cummings, George Dunlap, Fred Lamprecht, and Scott Simpson.
When it comes to team victories, Yale tops the list with 20 titles overall. In the NCAA era starting in 1939, Houston leads with 16 championships, followed closely by Oklahoma with 11.
Since 2014, the men’s NCAA golf championships have been broadcast on the Golf Channel.
