Do you remember when Novak Djokovic made an entrance at Wimbledon in his luxurious Bentley Continental GT? Or when Rafael Nadal was seen driving his impressive Aston Martin DBS around Mallorca post the challenging clay season? Even the dapper Roger Federer has been spotted in a stunning Mercedes-AMG GTS. These champions often share glimpses of their extravagant vehicles, acquired through lucrative sponsorships or through their hard-fought successes. Now, as he approaches Monte Carlo, Holger Rune has also expressed his excitement for a speedy ride!
In an interview with Tennis TV in Monte Carlo on Tuesday, Rune was asked about the opulent lifestyle surrounding him in the city filled with fast cars and yachts. The interviewer posed a playful question: if Rune could trade one of his “flashy” cars for his tennis gear, what would it be? Rune cheekily responded, “It might be the new Porsche that I just bought, actually,” pointing to a supposedly “green” Porsche 911 parked near the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
With a grin on his face, Rune noted how impressed the interviewer seemed with his choice, labeling it as “fast.” However, he humorously disclosed that he still hasn’t obtained a driver’s license to experience the thrill of driving it himself. He hopes to secure one soon, despite his busy schedule filled with tournaments in “Monaco, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, it’s busy out there.” So, why did he choose a Porsche 911?

The inspiration comes from Novak Djokovic, who was recently spotted driving his own Porsche 911 in Miami. Rune expressed his admiration, stating, “I saw it, and I was ‘like s*** that’s unbelievable.’ I was like ‘I need it. I need this one.” This high-performance car is valued at around €275,000, featuring over 600 horsepower and a sensational acceleration that goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 330 km/h. Although Djokovic didn’t clinch the Miami Open title, his car certainly caught Rune’s attention.
Fun fact: Other athletes, like Maria Sharapova and former US Open champion Emma Raducanu, are also known for their love of the Porsche 911, which has even been favored by past players like Zoran Tosic.
Rune has a deep admiration for Djokovic, having shared annual training sessions in Monte Carlo since 2021, establishing a meaningful bond. On the court, they’ve met six times, with Djokovic leading their encounters 4-2. Their most notable clash was when Rune triumphed over Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Rome event.
Surprisingly, Rune still hasn’t acquired his driver’s license! Despite wanting to obtain it since 2022, he received a fully electric BMW i4 M50 twice, which he hasn’t been able to drive for the same reason!
Holger Rune’s Cars Without a License
In 2023, Holger Rune celebrated back-to-back wins at the BMW Open in Munich, earning a stylish BMW i4 M50 Gran Coupe again. However, he faces a dilemma: Rune still doesn’t hold a driver’s license, meaning he could only take staged photos beside his new vehicle after beating Botic van de Zandschulp. Yet, he managed to enjoy a brief ride around the court as a passenger!
Rune’s 2022 BMW has now become a family car, primarily driven by his father. Rune mentioned to Bild, “The winning car from last year has become our family car now. Mostly my father drives them. I still haven’t got my driver’s license. It’s on my list, but it’s very time-consuming.”

For those curious, the BMW i4 M50 is certainly an impressive prize. It’s a four-door Gran Coupé made in Munich and currently stands as BMW’s best-selling M model. Since 1987, BMW has been the title partner of the BMW Open, which had a total prize purse of €630,705 this year.
Now, with his new Porsche 911, inspired by Novak Djokovic, the question remains: will Rune ever get to drive it himself? That’s yet to be determined. Meanwhile, Rune has had to withdraw from his opening match in Monte Carlo against Nuno Borges due to a wrist injury, and fans are hoping for his swift recovery!
