Dear Braves Fans:
I Mean No Harm, I Swear
by RONALD ACUÑA JR.
The first thing to know about me is that growing up in La Sabana, Venezuela, I needed just two things: a newspaper and tape. While my family would easily provide the newspaper, acquiring that all-important roll of tape was a bit more challenging.
Chasing a Dream
When I turned 16, I nearly lost sight of my dream of becoming a professional baseball player. After countless tryouts where I consistently showcased my skills but never got the call, frustration set in. I told my mom I wanted to stop trying out when a scout from the Atlanta Braves, Rolando Petit, reached out, insisting I come to Caracas for a signing.
A New Beginning
Just like that, I was signed. Returning home, my mom cried tears of joy, and that night she reminded me to keep working hard to make it to the Major Leagues. It was an emotional moment, reflecting my family’s support as I embarked on a new journey in the US.
Facing Challenges
Adjusting to life in America was not easy. The language barrier made simple tasks like ordering food quite tough. Relying on teammates to translate or memorizing orders became my routine. The loneliness of being away from home and familiar faces added to the challenge, but I persevered.
Growth and Learning
As a shy person off the field, the transition was overwhelming. I struggled to communicate, and the language barrier only complicated social interactions and professional opportunities. Even after getting called up to the major leagues, I faced hurdles, including moments where I acted without thinking, leading to setbacks in my career.
Looking Ahead
Today, with my past behind me, I am focused on the future and determined to contribute to the Atlanta Braves winning another World Series. The mix of experienced veterans and young talent on our team fosters a supportive environment that’s vital for our success. This year, I’m determined to help lead us to victory and fulfill the dreams I’ve had since childhood while making my family proud.
My Dream Moment
I envision closing out the World Series at home in Truist Park, with the fans going wild as I make pivotal plays. That moment is not just a dream; it’s what drives me each day. I remain committed to working hard, improving myself, and striving for personal excellence in every game alongside my teammates.
