On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs held their first required minicamp session of the 2025 season at their training facility within the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City.
Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was present. He shared some insights on social media, beginning with the attendance.
The first mandatory minicamp practice coincided with a ‘First Look’ event for select season-ticket holders, who watched along. Even a little crowd noise adds to the atmosphere. The weather was overcast, with temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s.

Only one player was notably absent, and four newcomers participated.
Attendance was nearly perfect, with only TEs Tre Watson and Jake Briningstool not participating. Briningstool was present but without a helmet. The #Chiefs also hosted four tryout players: WR Tanner Knue, TE Geor’Quarius Spivey, OT Ricky Lee, and C Joe Lombard.

Several players were limited in their activities.
I noticed four players who seemed to have restrictions: DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, OTs Jaylon Moore and Jawaan Taylor, and TE Jared Wiley. OT Josh Simmons participated fully and updated reporters on his recovery after practice.

Trey Smith was in attendance.
Franchise-tagged RG Trey Smith was at practice. The Chiefs had been uncertain about his attendance last week, but his presence prevents any fines as his representatives negotiate a long-term contract. DT Chris Jones joked about Smith’s contract situation.

Travis Kelce was also present.
Patrick Mahomes and his starting running back quickly made their impact.
On the first play of 11-on-11, RB Isiah Pacheco lined up wide and outpaced CB Trent McDuffie down the sideline, catching a pass that would likely have resulted in a touchdown. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster also secured a catch against McDuffie shortly thereafter.

Defensive backs made their presence felt.
During the same segment, CB Nohl Williams intercepted QB Gardner Minshew, showcasing his athleticism. WR Justyn Ross also made an excellent catch from QB Chris Oladokun on a right sideline route.

However, Mahomes was able to respond effectively.
Mahomes finished the period with touchdowns to RB Brashard Smith and Kelce, who found space in the soft coverage. Although it was a short 2-yard touchdown, Kelce celebrated enthusiastically.

Backup quarterbacks also took the field.
During Minshew’s eventual plays, rookie DE Ashton Gillotte would have recorded a sack in a contact situation. LB Cole Christiansen disrupted a Minshew pass intended for TE Robert Tonyan. QB Bailey Zappe connected with Ross for a touchdown.

Next, they progressed to 7-on-7 drills.
In the 7-on-7 segment, Mahomes successfully threw to Kelce, Tonyan, and Rice, and Smith-Schuster made a remarkable diving catch. Mahomes’ accuracy was nearly flawless until DB Chamarri Conner broke up a pass intended for Smith.

While in 7-on-7, S Major Williams deflected a pass from Oladokun, which landed in LB Brandon George’s hands.

The training continued with red zone 7-on-7, where Mahomes threw touchdowns to Rice and Smith-Schuster, who successfully tapped in both feet as DC Steve Spagnuolo contested. A playful moment ensued, captured by the @Chiefs video crew. Smith-Schuster would later add another score in the final 11-on-11.

Both Justyn Ross and Elijhah Badger made notable plays.
In the red zone 7-on-7, Ross caught a touchdown from Minshew, tapping both feet in bounds, while WR Elijhah Badger made a one-handed catch from Oladokun just inside the front right pylon, despite tight coverage from a defender.

Pete summarized Mahomes’ targets during the session.
Mahomes’ targets in 11-on-11 included: Smith-Schuster (4), Brownlee, TE Noah Gray (3), Rice (3), Kelce (2), Moore (2), Pacheco (2), Ross, Smith, WR Tyquan Thornton, and WR Xavier Worthy.
