Meet Matt Nadauld: A Remarkable Athlete
There may not be another high school athlete in Utah as accomplished as Matt Nadauld. At just 17, this junior from Bountiful High has garnered three national championship titles since he took up competitive wheelchair tennis less than three years ago, with his latest wins occurring last September.
Passion for Tennis
“I’m extremely competitive, which can be intense,” Nadauld joked during an interview with the Deseret News. “It’s exhilarating to compete, push your limits, and engage in something you love. Tennis is my passion, and I enjoy performing at a high level.”
A Journey in Sports
Born with spina bifida, Nadauld has been in a wheelchair his whole life. His enthusiasm for sports led him to a wheelchair tennis camp near Salt Lake City a few years back, where he caught the attention of professionals like Marianne Orr.
“From the start, he displayed excellent hand-eye coordination and an undeniable excitement for tennis,” Orr noted, highlighting his drive to advance in the sport and the remarkable progress he has made over the past few years.
Training and Development
Nadauld has advanced rapidly, moving on to adult camps, and eventually to rigorous training sessions with coach Quinn Allred, focusing on playing competitively in tournaments. “His strength lies in his spin shots, which have high RPMs, making them difficult for opponents to handle,” Allred explained.
Since his debut in March 2023, he has traveled nationwide for tournaments, including competitions in prominent locations like Indian Wells, California, and Orlando, Florida, preparing by playing against various skilled opponents.
Building a Community
Despite his achievements, Nadauld treasures the friendships he’s formed through these events. “The camaraderie with fellow competitors is special,” he said. “We share a unique bond, navigating challenges together while striving for excellence.”
Character Beyond Sport
Nadauld’s sportsmanship has earned him several awards, reflecting his ability to remain true to himself amid high-stakes situations. “Recognition beyond tennis is what matters most to me,” he expressed, highlighting his commitment to being a good person.
A Positive Perspective
Life hasn’t been easy for Nadauld, who faced numerous health challenges, including multiple surgeries. Nevertheless, he remains optimistic and serves as an inspiration to those around him. “He’s someone who thrives on positivity and views every challenge as a chance for growth,” remarked Allred.
Everybody’s Friend
Nadauld’s mother, Kelly, believes his experiences have enriched his ability to connect with others. “He’s friends with everyone and always looks out for others,” she noted. He attributes his optimistic outlook and strength to his faith, stating, “Even facing obstacles, I choose to make the most of my life and appreciate the people surrounding me.”
