Sameer Rizvi Shines in IPL 2026: A Smart Investment for Delhi Capitals
New Delhi: In a matter of days, Sameer Rizvi has emerged as a standout player in the ongoing IPL, keeping the Delhi Capitals unbeaten. This young talent from Uttar Pradesh successfully led two chases under pressure, affirming the franchise’s choice to retain him amid a challenging transfer window.
As reported in November by TimesofIndia.com, Sanju Samson was close to joining the Capitals, but the negotiations faltered due to Rajasthan Royals’ demand for another uncapped Indian player. Despite Samson’s willingness to switch teams, the trade hit a snag when DC refused to give up Rizvi, someone they identified as highly promising, even without the experience of a player like Samson.
Rizvi, who played only five matches in the previous season, had made a mark by scoring 121 runs. His impressive performance and growth during training convinced the Capitals’ management to gamble on him. They secured him for ₹95 lakh, a significant drop from his previous auction price of ₹8.40 crore. The effort he invested in honing his skills over the past year is now paying off.
In this season, Rizvi has excelled with notable innings: an unbeaten 70 against Lucknow Super Giants and a remarkable 90 against Mumbai Indians. His maturity at just 22 years old has helped him navigate tricky run chases, showcasing a calm approach under pressure, making him a critical asset for the team.
After transitioning from the age-group circuit in Uttar Pradesh to being a marquee player for CSK at the 2024 auction, Rizvi’s initial season didn’t yield the expected results. However, learning from those setbacks, he focused on enhancing his technique against fast bowlers and displayed significant improvement in his recent performances.
Rizvi’s recent innings demonstrate his strategic mindset, as he entered matches at 7/2 against MI and 21/2 against LSG. His objective was clear: take time to settle before seizing control of the game. The DC coaching staff chose him over more experienced players, a decision that proved fruitful.
Despite being at the early stage of his IPL career, Rizvi appears to be on a promising trajectory. The Delhi Capitals’ management deserves recognition for both acquiring him at a bargain and resisting the urge to trade him, highlighting their foresight in building a robust team for the future.
