Israel’s Defence Minister’s Ultimatum
The Defence Minister of Israel has instructed the military to “occupy further regions in Gaza” and warned of a possible permanent presence in parts of the territory if Hamas does not release all remaining hostages.
Military Operations Intensifying
Israel Katz stated that the military operations in Gaza would be conducted “with increasing intensity” until every hostage, both alive and deceased, is retrieved.
Status of Hostages and Ceasefire
Current estimates suggest that 24 out of the 59 hostages still held in Gaza are alive, but their situation remains uncertain as talks to advance the ceasefire agreement have stalled.
Resumption of Airstrikes
A ceasefire that had been in effect since January ended this week as Israel resumed its ground offensive and airstrikes on Gaza, leading to hundreds of casualties.
Humanitarian Crisis
The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa, described the conditions in Gaza as “extremely concerning,” emphasizing the humanitarian tragedies unfolding across the region.
International Accusations and Responses
Both Israel and the US have accused Hamas of refusing to agree to a ceasefire extension, while Hamas claims it is negotiating “with full responsibility and seriousness.” Meanwhile, Katz warned that continued Hamas resistance would lead to a loss of territory to Israel.
Impact of the Conflict
Since the beginning of the current military campaign following an unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages, over 49,500 Palestinians have reportedly died in Gaza, along with significant destruction of homes and infrastructure.
