Jack Draper Begins Grass-Court Season with a Strong Victory at Queen’s
Jack Draper aimed to start his grass-court campaign with a significant win in his first match at Queen’s.
The British number one has had an impressive start to the 2025 season, entering the ATP top ten and securing the most significant title of his career.
Following his victory at Indian Wells in March, Draper reached the final at the Madrid Open soon after, achieving a personal-best ranking of fourth in the world.
Draper Aims for Recovery in Rankings
After recently dropping to sixth in the world, Draper seeks to regain momentum with a strong performance on the grass at the Queen’s Club Championships.
He certainly made an excellent start, winning his first match against Jenson Brooksby in straight sets.
Draper Reflects on Andy Murray’s Influence
After the match, Draper spoke about his admiration for former British number one, Andy Murray. During his on-court interview, he humorously remarked, “Can’t get rid of this guy,” reflecting on Murray’s lasting impact on his career.
“Andy is an unbelievable guy who has inspired me tremendously. I wouldn’t be where I am without him,” Draper added, acknowledging his memories of watching Murray triumph at tournaments.
Draper’s Feelings About Playing at Home
Draper is delighted to compete at home and discussed the challenges of transitioning from clay to grass, stating, “It’s always tricky coming onto grass after the clay. The more matches I play, the better I will adapt, and I’m excited about this surface.”
He expressed gratitude for the support from his team and the LTA, emphasizing, “This comeback is a testament to the hard work I’ve put in and everyone around me.”
Looking Ahead: Draper vs. Popyrin
As Draper prepares for his second-round match, former British player Annabel Croft highlighted his next opponent, Alexei Popyrin, calling him a “very dangerous player” known for his explosive shot-making and big serves. Although Draper has previously beaten Popyrin, Croft noted that this encounter may be more challenging.
Only time will tell who will secure a spot in the Queen’s quarterfinals as Draper and Popyrin are set to face off on June 18.
