Hurricane Melissa Approaches Jamaica
On Saturday, Jamaican officials issued urgent warnings as Hurricane Melissa heads towards the island, threatening to be the strongest storm ever observed there.
Storm Intensification and Forecast
U.S. meteorologists reported that Melissa is rapidly gaining strength and is expected to attain Category 5 status within the next 48 hours, which is the highest classification of hurricanes, featuring sustained winds of at least 157 mph.
Direct Impact on Jamaica
The National Hurricane Center indicated in their 5 p.m. ET forecast discussion that forecasts are increasingly suggesting that Melissa will hit Jamaica directly, likely early Tuesday.
Government Advisories
Daryl Vaz, Jamaica’s minister of science, energy, telecommunications, and transport, urged residents not to underestimate the storm risks. “Avoid making foolish choices, such as venturing outside during the storm to see its effects,” he cautioned.
Airport Closures and Warnings
Jamaican airports will close at 8 p.m. on Saturday; the last scheduled flight may land if delayed, but all subsequent flights will be paused until further notice.
Predicted Rainfall and Flooding
The hurricane center projected that by Sunday, Melissa would become a major Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds between 111 mph and 129 mph. If it reaches Category 4, it will set a record for the strongest storm to pass over Jamaica.
Evacuations and Safety Measures
Across Jamaica and southern Hispaniola, dangers of severe flash floods and landslides are expected in the coming days, prompting advisories for boat operators to secure their vessels. The storm is forecasted to bring between 20 to 30 inches of rain, leading to “very concerning” conditions, as per remarks by National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Jamie Rhome.
