Editor’s note: This is the second installment of Dane Brugler’s 2026 Summer Scouting series. Previous rankings: Edge rusher
While there is a clear RB1 this year, my initial look at the running back class left me somewhat unimpressed—possibly due to the depth of the last draft. Jeremiyah Love from Notre Dame stands out as a player to watch and will be highly sought after in the next draft. However, I found it difficult to identify another running back for 2026 who could easily be a top-75 pick, although this may change in the upcoming season.
These running back rankings are likely to evolve considerably over the next eight months.
1. Jeremiyah Love, Notre Dame (6-0e, 210e)*
Strengths: Instinctive athleticism
Love’s remarkable talent is easy to recognize. He showcases impressive agility, quick acceleration, and innate patience, along with balance through contact, making him difficult to tackle. His 76-yard run against Virginia exemplifies his abilities: upon receiving the handoff, he quickly adjusts to an unexpected block and finds a new lane, demonstrating his ability to read the field and make explosive plays.
Area for Growth: Expanding his receiving repertoire
Although Love has been effective as a pass catcher, all 28 of his receptions last season came from screens, mostly behind the line of scrimmage. Given his speed, it would be beneficial for him to have more chances as a route runner or in a slot position beyond five yards.
2026 NFL Draft Prospects
Last year, Ashton Jeanty was the unanimous RB1 prospect, and Bijan Robinson was a top prospect entering the 2022 season. This year, Love is positioned as the clear top running back prospect for the 2026 NFL Draft, with potential to join Jeanty and Robinson, both of whom were drafted in the top 10.
2. Nick Singleton, Penn State (6-0 3/8v, 218v)
Strengths: Unique size and speed
Singleton excels as a one-cut runner, combining power and burst, allowing him to navigate through holes swiftly. Anticipated to run a 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range, he represents a big-play threat every time he has the ball.
Area for Improvement: Creativity
Singleton often relies on his blockers for lanes, showing inconsistency in vision at times. While he demonstrates strong abilities in zone running, a more creative approach in navigating plays could serve him better in the NFL.
2026 NFL Draft Outlook
After considering third-round feedback from NFL teams, Singleton opted to return for his senior season. Teaming up with Kaytron Allen, they form a formidable running back duo. Singleton’s athleticism and ability to create explosive plays may help raise his draft stock further.
