Optimism for the 2026 Season
Although there’s still work to be done, Jones is feeling positive about the upcoming 2026 season. The team’s recent defensive acquisitions, particularly in the secondary and on the defensive line, have bolstered their outlook.
Significant Defensive Enhancements
“We’ve made considerable strides in enhancing our defense,” said Jones. “If we can maintain last year’s offensive performance and improve our depth, particularly in special teams, there’s no reason we can’t match our previous success. Given where we stood last season, we can certainly expect some improvements.”
Focus on Linebacker Position
The linebacker position remains a notable gap in the roster, as the Cowboys haven’t added any external players there. Jones acknowledged this issue and mentioned that the team is exploring options for improvement ahead of the upcoming NFL Draft.
Trade Considerations and Draft Strategy
While the Cowboys are open to trading to enhance the linebacker position, they’re also considering using one of their top three picks in the draft to secure a player they like in that role. A middle linebacker, in particular, is a priority.
Improving the Pass Rush
The Cowboys will need to enhance their pass rush, having tied for 22nd in sacks last season with 35. They have made some changes this offseason, including acquiring Rashan Gary and Tyrus Wheat, while aiming for their existing players to step up as well.
New Defensive Coordinator’s Impact
One of the most significant additions for the defense is new coordinator Christian Parker, who is expected to be a transformative figure for the team. Jones believes Parker could become a standout coach in the league, thanks to his impressive performance in interviews and his capacity to innovate.
Adapting the Defensive Scheme
As the Cowboys transition from a 4-3 to a base 3-4 defense, flexibility remains key. Jones emphasized the need for players who can cover space while applying pressure, particularly those who excel as outside rushers. Draft considerations for filling these roles are ongoing, with an emphasis on leveraging their draft capital to make impactful acquisitions.
