Jimmie Johnson’s Post-Cup Series Journey
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Seven-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson stepped away from full-time NASCAR racing following the 2020 season. While many anticipated his return for another full season in 2021 amidst packed post-COVID tracks, Johnson was prepared for new challenges.
He has embraced various new adventures, including a couple of years in INDYCAR and acquiring a stake in GMS Racing, ultimately becoming the majority owner of what is now Legacy Motor Club, which aims to increase its fleet from two to three Cup cars by 2027.
Johnson lived in England for a few years but returned to the U.S. full-time in 2025, now focusing on enhancing his team’s performance. This year, he has two Cup races on his agenda: the Daytona 500 (a race he has participated in for the past three years) and a one-off race at Naval Base Coronado in California, near his hometown of El Cajon.
Johnson shared insights about his identity in this new chapter of life, especially after leaving full-time NASCAR competition:
Understanding Myself After NASCAR
“It’s an intriguing question. I’ve gained a greater self-awareness. This period has allowed for deep reflection, helping me understand who I was and what it took to become that person. Competition often makes you feel like you’re on a treadmill, lacking the clarity that could be beneficial. With time away from that environment, I’ve found myself more reflective and aware.”
