JT Ewing’s Transfer Announcement
ACC finalist and NCAA qualifier JT Ewing has confirmed to SwimSwam his transfer to Arizona State University for the 2025-2026 season. Ewing, currently a redshirt sophomore at North Carolina State University, has two years of eligibility left.
Career Overview
A native of Falls Church, Virginia, Ewing has spent the last three seasons at NC State, where he specializes in backstroke events and also competes in middle-distance freestyle. Remarkably, in early March, he swam the 200 back three times at the Bulldog Last Chance Meet to secure his NCAA spot, achieving times of 1:40.13, 1:40.47, and 1:40.29. At the NCAAs, he clocked a 46.35 in the 100 back prelims, finishing 43rd, and set a personal best of 1:40.06 and placed 24th in the 200 back.
Recent Highlights
Ewing qualified for the 2024 NCAAs but was excluded from NC State’s final roster. He did participate in the ACC Championships, where he reached the ‘A’ final of the 200 back with a prelim time of 1:40.78, ultimately finishing 8th in the final with a time of 1:42.82. A two-time U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, Ewing competed in both 2021 and 2024 in the 200 back, adding the 100 back in 2024. His highest finish was 17th in 2023, narrowly missing the semifinals.
Top Times in Short Course Yards
- 100 Backstroke: 46.32
- 200 Backstroke: 1:40.06
- 100 Freestyle: 44.29
- 200 Freestyle: 1:34.28
Impact at Arizona State University
Ewing’s addition significantly enhances ASU’s backstroke roster, as his 200 back time of 1:40.06 would have led their depth chart last season by nearly two seconds. His best 100 back time would position him 5th on the current team rankings. Additionally, his 200 back record would have secured the Big 12 title this past season, where Cincinnati’s Hunter Gubeno took the gold with a time of 1:40.38.
Continued Growth for ASU Swimming
This marks Arizona State’s fifth noteworthy transfer this offseason, as Adam Chaney, a significant contributor to Florida’s NCAA record-breaking relays, also announced he will utilize his fifth year of eligibility with the Sun Devils. Alongside Chaney, ASU adds SEC champion Andrew Taylor, NCAA ‘B’ finalist Jordan Tiffany, and NCAA All-American Remi Fabiani through transfers for next season.
