Kansas City Plans $600 Million for New MLB Stadium
Kansas City, Missouri is pursuing a proposal to issue $600 million in bonds for a new downtown stadium for Major League Baseball’s Royals. This initiative comes after Kansas successfully attracted the professional football’s Chiefs with a significant stadium subsidy.
Proposed Stadium Location
Mayor Quinton Lucas and a majority of the City Council introduced an ordinance on Thursday that would empower the city manager to negotiate with the Royals regarding a new stadium site, located near Union Station and the World War I museum, around 6 miles from the current Kauffman Stadium.
Stadium Costs and Funding
The anticipated cost of the new stadium is $1.9 billion, with Missouri’s recent legislation permitting the state to contribute half, or $950 million. If Kansas City proceeds with the bond issuance, the Royals will be responsible for raising $350 million in private funding.
Current Stadium Context
Kauffman Stadium is situated next to Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Chiefs, within the Truman Sports Complex which has housed both teams since 1973. Their current leases expire in 2031, and in April 2024, voters in the county rejected extending a tax designed to support renovations for both stadiums.
Alternative Stadium Considerations
The Royals are also exploring a potential stadium site about 5 miles north in North Kansas City, indicating that multiple options are still on the table.
Kansas Legislative Response
Leadership in Kansas has shown reluctance to pursue a deal to attract the Royals following Missouri’s commitment of $2.4 billion in bonds for a new $3 billion domed stadium for the Chiefs. Legislative figures expressed their congratulations to Missouri while expressing anticipation for future developments.
Community Impact Concerns
Economists have long argued that subsidizing sports stadiums does not yield the expected benefits to the community, often redirecting economic activity rather than creating new growth. Nonetheless, subsidies for stadium renovations and constructions persist. Missouri’s governor considers the Royals vital to the state’s economic landscape, pledging continued collaboration to keep the team in Missouri.
