Keane Urges United to Consider Eddie Howe
Roy Keane has advocated for Eddie Howe to replace Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, while Gary Neville has urged the club’s leadership to “eliminate risks,” recommending Thomas Tuchel as the ideal candidate.
Amorim was let go on January 5, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick being considered for interim roles until a permanent manager is appointed in the summer.
The dismissal of Amorim, just over a year after his appointment, marks the sixth managerial change at United since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Neville emphasizes the importance of minimizing risk in choosing the next manager.
Potential Candidates for the Permanent Role
The list of potential candidates for the permanent position has yet to be finalized. However, Keane believes that Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe could be a strong choice, bringing experience and composure to the club.
In a discussion on Sky Sports, Keane stated, “I would choose Eddie Howe. I admire the work he’s done; he has substantial managerial experience. When his teams perform well, they play attractive football. He does face criticism, yet I appreciate his accomplishments at Newcastle.”
Concerns About Interim Management
The club has been impressed with the current interim manager, Darren Fletcher, due to his professionalism and rapport with the squad. Despite this, after a 2-2 draw with Burnley in his debut, Keane quickly dismissed any notion of Fletcher becoming the permanent manager.
Keane commented, “Do I believe Fletcher is the right choice for the long term? Absolutely not. He is taking charge temporarily. While he may win a few games, the club needs a top-tier manager to effectively manage the dressing room.”
Neville’s Call for Experienced Leadership
Neville echoed Keane’s sentiments regarding the necessity of an experienced leader, stating that the club needs to “eliminate risks” with their next head coach by selecting someone familiar with the Premier League, capable of handling pressure, and with a proven success record.
Neville remarked, “For an extended period, the quality of football has been lacking. Among past appointments, Jose Mourinho is the only one who meets the club’s standards. The next manager must have Premier League experience, success in Europe, and the ability to thrive in high-pressure situations. Candidates like Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel fit this profile well.”
