Indiana Basketball Welcomes Kenny Johnson as Assistant Coach
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – On Tuesday, Indiana’s head men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries announced the appointment of Kenny Johnson as his assistant coach.
“Kenny has consistently made a significant impact on the recruiting front throughout his career,” stated DeVries. “He has a proven ability to attract top-tier talent wherever he goes. His history of helping players reach the NBA, particularly lottery selections, is impressive.”
Johnson recently spent the 2024-25 season as an assistant coach at Georgetown under Ed Cooley. During this time, the team recorded 18 wins, including key victories against Creighton and Xavier, and made it to the semifinals of the first-ever College Basketball Crown Tournament. Additionally, Georgetown secured the 17th ranked recruiting class in the nation, as reported by 247Sports.
Before his time at Georgetown, Johnson worked as an assistant coach at Rhode Island from 2022 to 2024, collaborating with Archie Miller. He also served as head coach and athletic director at National Christian Academy, a well-regarded program in Fort Washington, MD, during the 2020-22 seasons.
Prior to his roles at the prep and college levels, Johnson was an assistant coach at LaSalle from 2018 to 2020. He also had a lengthy tenure at Louisville (2014-2017) under Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino, where the Cardinals achieved an impressive 75-26 overall record, including an Elite Eight appearance in 2015.
Johnson initially worked with the Hoosiers from 2012 to 2014 as an assistant coach under Tom Crean. During that period, Indiana boasted an overall record of 46-22, clinched the Big Ten Championship, and secured the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament in the 2012-13 season, aided by strong recruiting classes.
Having started his coaching career in 2002 at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Johnson has also made significant contributions to the Nike Team Takeover AAU organization, coaching various age groups. He has been instrumental in the development of numerous NBA players, including All-Stars like Victor Oladipo and Donovan Mitchell.
