GREEN BAY – The Packers kicked off their 2025 training camp with the first practice on Wednesday at Nitschke Field, where players practiced without pads.
Insights from Opening Day
Here are five key takeaways from the first practice:
1. Flashy Locker Room, Focus on Performance
The upgraded locker room boasts larger screens, electronic nameplates, more space, and various amenities, impressing the players. Quarterback Jordan Love expressed excitement about the high-tech environment, stating, “It’s definitely a blessing to be in here.” However, Head Coach Matt LaFleur reminded the team to keep their focus on hard work as training camp progresses, stating, “These facilities won’t win games; we have to put in the effort on the field.”
2. Minimal Long-Term Injury Issues
Receiver Christian Watson is sidelined as he recovers from ACL surgery, while rookie offensive lineman John Williams may face an extended recovery due to a back injury. The remaining players not practicing, like LB Quay Walker (ankle) and OL Elgton Jenkins (back), are not projected to be out for an extended period.
3. Offensive Line Adjustments
With Jenkins unavailable, Sean Rhyan started at center, with Jordan Morgan filling in at right guard. This reshuffling is routine, aiming for Jenkins to return and continue transitioning to center. GM Brian Gutekunst indicated players may take time to be medically cleared but are expected back during camp, reinforcing that competition remains high for starting positions.
4. New Position for Bo Melton
Formerly wearing No. 80 as a wide receiver, Bo Melton has switched to No. 16 and is now a full-time cornerback. This transition, initially a spring experiment, is aimed at evaluating his potential in a position where the defensive depth is untested. Melton is eager to succeed in his new role, recalling his past number and previous experience at cornerback during his college years.
5. First Highlight of Camp from Xavier McKinney
All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney delivered the first standout play of training camp by intercepting a pass intended for Dontayvion Wicks. Meanwhile, rookie first-round pick Matthew Golden shone by catching a touchdown from QB Malik Willis.
The Packers are optimistic about their team’s development but understand that achieving championship status requires persistent hard work. Gutekunst emphasized that while the players have the potential to become a formidable team, there’s a significant journey ahead that necessitates time and dedication.
