The National League’s wild-card race is more competitive than the American League’s, with numerous teams, including the Nationals, Marlins, Pirates, and Rockies, significantly distanced from playoff contention. All four are at least 10 games back and are expected to be major sellers as the trade deadline approaches.
With seven of the eight remaining NL teams in wild-card contention or within 2.5 games of a spot as of Tuesday, strategic trades could be crucial for standings in the coming months. The Giants have already made a significant move by acquiring Rafael Devers, increasing the urgency for other contenders to make impactful trades before the July 31 deadline to solidify their playoff positions.
Last week, I shared trade proposals for the 10 teams involved in the AL wild-card race. Now, it’s time to focus on the NL. Below are notable trade suggestions for each of the seven teams actively competing for a wild-card berth (note that Atlanta, currently six games out, is not included).
1. Mets — Trade for RHP Jake Bird and RHP Seth Halvorsen from the Rockies
The Mets are engaged in a tight race with the Phillies, and with the Braves within striking distance, acquiring depth for their bullpen is essential. This proposal would see the Mets secure Bird and Halvorsen, two of the Rockies’ top relievers. Bird, with a 2.06 ERA over 33 games, pairs effectively with Halvorsen, who shows significant potential. Both players remain under team control for several years.
2. Giants — Acquire RHP Kyle Finnegan from the Nationals
After their successful acquisition of Devers, the Giants should target more bullpen depth. Finnegan, although having recorded five blown saves this season, boasts a solid 2.93 ERA and 18 saves. In exchange, the Nationals would receive two left-handed pitching prospects, Whitman and Bresnahan, both of whom hold promise for the future.
3. Brewers — Trade for 3B Ryan McMahon from the Rockies
Lacking offensive production from their infield, the Brewers are looking to add McMahon, who has improved significantly offensively. While he’s under contract for a hefty sum, the Rockies may entertain the deal if it comes with a promising player like Adams, who has shown offensive capability in the minors.
4. Cardinals — Acquire INF Kevin McGonigle from the Tigers
This move is geared towards future success as the Cardinals look to add McGonigle, an exceptional hitting prospect. The deal would involve trading away Arenado, alongside Helsley, to give the Tigers a top-tier third baseman and closer, enhancing their playoff prospects.
5. Padres — Obtain RHP Sandy Alcantara from the Marlins
Despite a rocky season, Alcantara is regaining form and could be a significant asset for the Padres. This proposal would likely strip them of top prospects Salas and De Vries, but acquiring Alcantara, who is signed through 2026, could solidify their rotation for years to come.
6. Reds — Trade for 1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn from the Orioles
The Reds are seeking to enhance their lineup with O’Hearn, who has demonstrated solid offensive numbers. In exchange, they would send high-upside prospects to the Orioles, making this a beneficial arrangement for both teams in the near and distant future.
7. Diamondbacks — Acquire LHP Tyler Anderson from the Angels
Despite injury challenges, the Diamondbacks remain in the hunt and may look to acquire Anderson. The trade would send two minor-league pitchers to the Angels while relieving them of Anderson’s salary. This move could be a strategic addition as they push towards the postseason.
