Developer Larian Studios Addresses AI Use in Upcoming Game
Larian Studios, known for Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity Original Sin, recently sparked both excitement and some backlash with the announcement of their new RPG, Divinity, at The Game Awards. Co-founder and designer Swen Vincke’s comments about the use of generative AI in the game’s development have tempered some of the initial enthusiasm.
Clarifying AI Implementation
In an interview with Bloomberg, Vincke explained that the studio intends to use generative AI for minor tasks such as creating PowerPoint presentations, concept art, and placeholder text. However, he emphasized that the final content in Divinity will be crafted by human hands, stating, “We’re writing everything ourselves.”
Fan Reactions and Clarifications
Despite these assurances, the admission of using AI technology has upset some fans. Following the report and the resulting negative feedback, Polygon reached out to Larian for further clarification. Vincke reassured that the studio is expanding its team of artists and writers, with a focus on fostering human creativity rather than replacing it.
Vincke’s Detailed Explanation
“We’ve been continuously increasing our pool of concept artists, writers, and storytellers,” Vincke noted, emphasizing that they are hiring more creatives. “Any ML tool used well is additive to a creative team, not a replacement for their skill.”
Understanding the Role of AI in Development
On social media, Vincke elaborated that AI tools are used for reference and initial ideation, akin to how artists utilize Google and physical art books. He asserted that these tools are only a stepping stone to original artwork created by hired artists based on their talent and expertise.
Machine Learning Applications
In previous interviews, Vincke discussed three main applications for machine learning at Larian: automating tedious tasks, facilitating rapid prototyping, and eventually exploring new gameplay dynamics. While the last aspect is still a future goal, he stressed that the core creative areas like visuals, writing, and music remain unaffected by AI.
Reassurance to Fans
Whether these explanations will alleviate concerns from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity fans about the use of generative AI is uncertain. Nevertheless, it seems any elements derived from AI will be used to enhance, not detract from the human touch of the game’s content.
