Greetings, Yahoo readers! I’m Brett Arnold, a film critic and veteran Yahoo editor, returning with another edition of Trust Me, I Watch Everything.
This week is especially exciting, featuring two remarkable indie films hitting theaters alongside the fourth installment of the popular The Conjuring horror franchise. At home, you can now rent or purchase The Naked Gun and Nobody 2, both of which I previously recommended.
On the streaming side, the Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd A24 comedy Friendship has premiered on HBO Max, and Spike Lee’s latest film with Denzel Washington, Highest 2 Lowest, is available on Apple TV+ following a limited release.
Keep reading because there’s still more to discover, ensuring something for everyone!
🎥 What to Watch in Theaters
My Recommendation: The Conjuring: Last Rites
Why You Should Watch It: The fourth installment of the hugely successful Conjuring franchise is actually the *ninth* in the larger Conjuring Universe, depending on whether you include The Curse of La Llorona. While the haunted-house and exorcism trope is familiar territory in horror, The Conjuring: Last Rites excels within those bounds. The film features several effective and suspenseful scenes and some excellent jump scares.
This sequel significantly improves upon its predecessor, The Devil Made Me Do It, focusing once again on a supernatural situation that requires the help of the Warrens. This time, they confront mysterious forces tied to their past, leading to a personal story revolving around their daughter, Judy.
What Other Critics Are Saying: Reviews are mixed but leaning favorable. While some critics feel it’s an average scary movie, others see it as a fitting conclusion to the series.
Bonus Recommendation: Twinless
Why You Should Watch It: Initially, a clever premise unfolds into a darker narrative as two men bond in a twin bereavement support group. The film, featuring compelling performances, dives deep into themes of identity and loss.
What Other Critics Are Saying: This film has been praised as one of the best-reviewed movies of the year, showcasing a balance of humor and emotional depth that resonates well with audiences.
💸 Movies Newly Available to Rent or Buy
My Recommendation: The Naked Gun
Why You Should Maybe Watch It: Renowned for its humor, The Naked Gun is now available for home viewing. Though experiencing it in a packed theater might still be optimal, the laughs are just as potent on your couch.
Other Recommendations:
- The sequel Nobody 2, featuring Bob Odenkirk, has improved upon its original, blending serious action with comedic elements seamlessly.
That’s it for this week! Don’t forget to check back next week for more movie recommendations.
