Detroit Tigers Await Reliever Returns
The Detroit Tigers are currently anticipating the return of right-handed relievers Kyle Finnegan and Paul Sewald from the injury list. Both players, when healthy, are expected to play crucial roles in high-pressure situations during the regular season and playoffs.
Injury Updates
Sewald, aged 35, has been out since July 12 due to a right shoulder strain. Finnegan, 34, has been sidelined since September 1 because of a right adductor strain. Among the two, Sewald appears closer to making a comeback.
Trade Acquisitions
The Tigers obtained Sewald and Finnegan before the trade deadline on July 31, acquiring Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians and Finnegan from the Washington Nationals. Both relievers participated in a workout at Comerica Park on September 15, during the team’s off day.
Potential Return Dates
There’s a possibility that Sewald will return to the Tigers for their game against the Atlanta Braves on September 19. He was set to pitch in his fifth rehab game for Triple-A Toledo on September 16, where he had previously allowed just one run in four innings.
Manager’s Confidence
After Sewald’s Tuesday outing, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch mentioned that Sewald is waiting for a call regarding his next steps, which will dictate whether he plays with the Mud Hens or returns to the Tigers. Hinch expressed confidence in Sewald’s recovery.
Finnegan’s Progress
Meanwhile, Finnegan is preparing for a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo. His bullpen session during the September 15 workout was met with positive reactions from the coaching staff, indicating he is nearing a return by September 23.
Matt Vierling’s Setback
Outfielder/third baseman Matt Vierling, dealing with a left oblique strain, has been pulled from his rehab assignment after only one game. Still experiencing soreness, he’s currently undergoing additional medical evaluations.
